Ryno and Salonette Abrie carry an incredible redemption story of hope and healing.  They met in their mid-20’s and shortly after their engagement Ryno was rushed to hospital with a burst appendix.  More however was revealed in hospital – he was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer.  As Ryno faced the reality of possible death, his prayer was that God would allow him to live.  The Word of God became His anchor, especially two scriptures from Psalm 118.

Psalm 118:8 “It is better to trust in the Lord than to trust in man.”

Psalm 118: “I shall not die but live, and declare the works of the Lord.”

In spite of the incredible odds against them as a couple as well as the aggressive chemotherapy treatment, Ryno and Salonette chose to continue with their plans to marry and their desire to have children.   Miraculously Ryno went into remission but was told that he would not be able to have children.  As an act of faith, they decided to sell their house and buy a more child friendly home. Ryno distinctly heard the Father’s voice, “You will know by Salonette’s birthday whether you will have a child”.  To their delight and joy, on her birthday, they received confirmation that she was pregnant with their first child, Ryn.

However just after Ryn’s first birthday, Ryno’s routine checkup revealed that he had stage 4 liver cancer. This was a devastating blow to this young family as the statistical probability of surviving such an advanced form of the disease is minimal.  They drew strength from a song that a friend wrote for them which was based on Psalm 91.

“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.  This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God and I trust Him. He will rescue me from every trap and protect me from deadly disease. He will cover me with His feathers, and will shelter me with His wings.  His faithful promises are my armour and protection”.

This psalm and its promises carried them through the second round of chemo treatment, which was much more aggressive with 48 hour treatment sessions every two weeks.  Salonette drew courage from a vision that God gave her reassuring her that they would have two children and that Ryno would be healed.

Miraculously God has blessed them with 3 children and Ryno has lived cancer free for the past 4 years!   They testify that the trials and tests they have faced have prepared them for the calling God has placed on their lives, and they have learnt that He never goes back on His Word. Although His timing is different, His promises will always be fulfilled!
